Important Tips to Keep Your Home Germ Free

Given the current world, we find ourselves in, keeping a germ free home has never been more important.  In normal times being clean is just common sense. Taking whatever measures we can to stay healthy increases our abilities and longevity.  Especially if we have children around, we are reminded of the importance of cleanliness daily.  Here are a few tips to keep your home as clean as possible and control the spread of germs!

In reality, it would be impossible to make our homes 100% germ-free while still living in them, so we have to be creative and try for a balance of cleanliness and usability.  For example, we could always issue hazmat suits at the door or use hand sanitizer as body wash, but unless we have an unusually weak immune system, eliminating every germ simply isn’t necessary.

Many of the germs and viruses that can make us sick are transmitted from person to person directly.  Not to say germs and viruses can’t live on surfaces, as many can.  However, just a few changes in your daily routine such as frequent hand washing can make the most impact.  Most people don’t realize it, but they touch their faces many, many times a day.  Nothing wrong with touching your face, but a smart move would be to try and catch yourself and wash your hands first, or use hand sanitizer.  Once you’ve caught yourself a few times it will become second nature.  Teach your children as well.  After you wash your hands either use a paper towel or remember to wash your hand towels often!

Best Practices

Frequently use approved disinfectants to sanitize things like doorknobs and handrails.  Light switches and oven knobs get used more than you might think.   If you are preparing food you likely already take cleanliness seriously, however handling raw eggs isn’t necessarily the same as handling baby spinach. Remember, we often cook our food which also makes it safe to eat.  Raw foods like salads, fresh fruits and vegetables should be rinsed well before eating and perhaps avoided in times of crisis.

The best advice of all is just to remember all the advice your mom gave you and use it.  If you must touch your face, sanitize your hands first. Make sure anything you put around your eyes, nose, and mouth are clean.  Avoid direct contact with new people.  Extend your cleaning to your car, desk, or anywhere else you spend a lot of time.  Avoiding illness caused by germs is a never-ending problem we face.  However, with just a few tweaks to our daily routines, we can avoid many that would do us harm.  Employ as many suggestions presented here and you’ll be glad you did.
